When she was seventeen, Weiss spent time
at Central Juvenile Hall. The sense of recognition has helped her connect with the
students and to understand the trauma they
experience, the hidden memories that can
be uncovered. When Weiss shared with the
Probation Department her story of being in
the very same Juvenile Hall as a child, she
said that laughter filled the room along with
the comment, “The best come out of here.”
In June 2012, the organization’s profile
rose further when UpRising Yoga partnered with the Los Angeles County Probation Department and Rajashree Choudhury to host a fundraiser at the Dorothy
Chandler Pavilion for commercially sexually trafficked children – kids who have
been sold for sex. About the event, Weiss
stated, “So many people said that never
before had yoga and politics joined forces
in such a celebration.” Support continues
in the form of teachers, volunteers, and
donations from the Bikram Yoga community and beyond. Studios including Bikram
Yoga Mountain View and Bikram Yoga
Louisville have held fundraising classes.
Businesses, such as Suzanne Hansen’s glass
jewelry company, have offered to donate
proceeds to UpRising Yoga.
Increasing awareness of issues around
sexual trafficking are also part of UpRising Yoga’s collaborative mission. To address this, Clear Channel donated billboards and posters on the Metrolink and
around downtown. Weiss reports that
students say to her, “I hope you don’t
take this wrong, but when I see the posters about child sex trafficking, I think of
you.” To this Weiss says she responds,
“No, I am honored. I am so blessed.” Actions make a difference.
