Celebrate the Return of the Light and Align with Cosmic Time
BY SAUL DAVID RAYE AND DIVINE HARMONY
The Sanskrit word ritus means season; it is derived
from ritam which refers to the cosmic rhythm, flow, and
order. This represents the understanding that all of life is
linked through rhythm: the plants, the seasons, our own
heartbeats and emotions and all life here on Earth.
The word solstice is derived from the Latin words sol
(sun) and sistere (to stand still or stop); at the Solstices
(around December 21 and June 21) the Sun pauses at its
greatest distance from the celestial equator over the Tropic
of Capricorn (winter in the north, summer in the south) or
the Tropic of Cancer (summer in the northern hemisphere
and the winter in the south). At the Sun's highest point it
stands still from our point of view for approximately three
days before reversing direction.
The solstices mark the time when hours of daylight either begin to increase (December 21 in the north, June 21
in the south) or decrease (June 21 in the north, December
21 in the south).
Symbolically and spiritually, the solstices represent significant moments in our journey through the light and
dark. In the northern hemisphere, the long night of Winter Solstice takes us to the depth of the shadow then we
move through the darkness to emerge into a new cycle of
light. This is a beautiful metaphor for the dance of energies in our lives: embracing and honoring our light and
our shadow. This is the original meaning of wholeness: to
be holy is to be whole.
This year the northern hemisphere’s Winter Solstice falls
on Wednesday, December 21 at 9: 30 pm PST. It marks the
Sun's movement out of the sign of Sagittarius and into
Capricorn. We experience a shift from the expansive, fiery,
social, and adventurous energy of Sagittarius to the serious,
pragmatic, responsible, and grounded energy of Capricorn.
The holiday season surrounding the Solstice is a powerful
time to celebrate the union of shadow and light, affirm
life, honor the rebirth of the light from the inner womb
of darkness, and to pay tribute to the great mystery, our
Mother Earth, and all we hold sacred in our hearts.
