I am grateful for this practice, which
reminds me always to breathe and serve
with gentleness, intelligence, and fearlessness. Every once in a while, I actually get
it right!
I am grateful for my children. “Child
truly is the father of man,” as Wordsworth
said, and I am being raised right by the
six wonderful children in my life.
I am grateful for my teachers – which is
to say every single one of you.
I am grateful for the sadness and the
laughter alike, which remind me to be
grateful for all of it – and I do mean all
of it.
I am grateful for the Marx Brothers and
Salvador Dali and Stan Getz and George
Carlin and fire escapes and Wings of Desire – creations that poke, provoke, and
elevate. In the case of fire escapes, the elevation can be quite literal.
I am grateful for Kermit the Frog, Clark
Kent, and Richie Cunningham – three
journalists who inspired me to mastheads
– and Vin Scully, Joseph Campbell, and
Shakespeare, who have reminded me that
every life is an epic journey worthy of
compassion and eloquence.

Gratitude List:
I’m grateful to be able to live my amends.
I’m grateful for my wife, Riad, who has taught me what unconditional
love is.
I’m grateful I’m surrounded by those skilled at helping me discover ways
to see what service is.
I’m grateful I've got teachers in my life who are able to point out the
miracles so I might be fulfilled by them.
And I’m grateful, above all, that I’ve been gifted with the balance of
being a student of my son, whom I am graced with being able to teach,
care for and protect.
